The landscape of Bangladesh is dominated by about 250 rivers, which flow essentially north-south. Country made boats are the most widely used carriers on the rivers of bangladesh. These carry the bulk of passengers and merchandize in the rural area. Mechanized water transport is mainly operated by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), which runs ferry and launch services on the main routes. There are also services run by private companies. Journey by Rocket Steamer from Dhaka (Sadarghat) to Khulna, the gateway to the Sundarbans is a rewarding experience even though the journey time is approximately 28 hours.
